Sadly there are many unscrupulous breeders, breeding poor quality puppies just for money. A responsible breeder will always be aiming to breed beautiful, intelligent Goldens with gentle, biddable temperaments that make the most wonderful family pets.

We’ve outlined some tips below of what to look for when choosing a breeder and a puppy.

Our Tips

  1. The best place to find a well bred puppy will be either from a breed club such as this.
  2. Via the kennel club – https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/search/find-a-puppy/
  3. Or from golden retrievers – Sourcing Reputable Breeders UK which was set up by knowledgeable golden retriever enthusiasts to help people source a well bred puppy.
  4. Once you’ve found a breeder or a litter you like, arrange a visit. Good breeders will want to meet you as much as you want to meet them. Expect to be questioned about your suitability to have one of their precious puppies. If people are pushing a puppy on you, walk away.
  5. Ask to see all health testing paperwork – hip, elbow and eye certificates and Kennel club registration documents. With hips and elbows the lower the score the better. Ideally elbows should be 0-0 but 0-1 is acceptable. With hips the lower the number the better at the moment the breed average is 19. Please use this link to the kennel club health test results finder to find out more about the parents of the litter.
  6. Meet mum, and if puppies have already been born, see mum with her puppies. All dogs in the household should be friendly, biddable and well cared for.

When it comes to the exciting day of choosing your puppy make sure you look out for the following:

  1. Puppies should be confident and lively, coming to you to play and have cuddles. They should be affectionate and enjoy human interaction.
  2. Their coats should be clean and shiny, eyes bright and not runny.
  3. They should be nice chunky little puppies not thin or scrawny looking.
  4. The breeder should know each of her puppies well and be able to guide you to the right puppy for your family.

Puppies must be 8 weeks old before they can go to their new homes. They must be microchipped and should also be vet checked. They should be Kennel Club registered and come to you with their signed registration document and a puppy pack full of information on feeding and rearing your new puppy. A good breeder will be there to help and guide you, not only in these early weeks, but for the rest of your dogs life.
